DOG TRAINING

Bay Paws is proud to expand our services with the launch of professional dog training, beginning July 2025. Whether you're raising a new puppy or fine-tuning your adult dog’s manners, our new program is designed to support dogs of all breeds, ages, and behavior levels.

We’ve partnered with a certified professional trainer who uses balanced, psychology-based methods to create personalized, effective training plans. Our goal is to help dogs build confidence, develop good habits, and strengthen communication with their owners.

Training options include:

  • Group Classes – Great for building foundational skills like sit, stay, leash walking, and handling distractions in a structured setting.

  • Board and Train – An immersive option where dogs receive daily training while staying at our facility.

  • Private Sessions – One-on-one instruction customized to meet specific behavioral or obedience goals.

  • Play & Train – Short training sessions during daycare that reinforce positive play and modify nonsocial behaviors.

  • Puppy Preschool – Focused on socialization, housebreaking, early obedience, and confidence-building.

Why Training Matters
Training lays the groundwork for a happy, well-behaved dog. It promotes structure, reduces stress, and enhances your relationship through clear, consistent communication.

Quick Training Tips from Our Trainer

  • Be Consistent: Dogs thrive on clear routines and repeated cues.

  • Train in Real-Life Settings: Practice around distractions to build strong, reliable behavior anywhere.

At Bay Paws, our mission is to support your dog’s growth with thoughtful, rewarding training that fits your lifestyle.

Meet our Director of training

Bay Paws is thrilled to expand into dog training and the new department is being developed and led by a familiar face, Wendy Shaw. Wendy brings over 28 years of extensive, hands-on balanced dog training experience specializing in behavior modification. She has personally rescued and rehabilitated hundreds of animals, with a particular specialization in aggressive dogs, transforming challenging behaviors into positive outcomes. Her ability to foster positive, lasting human-animal relationships makes Wendy a highly sought-after and respected professional in the dog training and animal care industry. Her seasoned perspective, unparalleled experience, and genuine passion for helping pets and their people will help guide you on your journey to a more fulfilling relationship with your dog! As the current Director of Training at Bay Paws, Wendy oversees the dog training program and staff training across all 4 of our state-of-the-art pet resort locations.

Wendy’s dog training career started in 1997 where she apprenticed with a master trainer, she received a certification as a professional dog trainer from Connecticut K9 in 2002. From there, Wendy successfully owned and operated her own dog daycare and boarding facility in Connecticut for over ten years, generating a loyal roster of over three thousand clients. She was instrumental in developing team leaders and instilling advanced pack management techniques in her staff. She subsequently served as a business consultant & trainer for a diverse range of animal-centric businesses, including dog daycares, boarding facilities, grooming salons, and veterinary practices. She streamlined business practices, taught essential fear-free handling and restraint techniques, and provided extensive staff coaching on crucial topics like pack management and handling fractious (difficult to manage) pets. Wendy then joined Bay Paws and previously served as the Regional Manager before becoming the Director of Training.

Bay Paws is committed to providing the highest level of staff training and continuing education.

In her capacity as the Director of Training for staff members, Wendy teaches all Bay Paws staff Pet CPR and First Aid to ensure the highest standards of safety and care. Her responsibilities extend to continuing team training and the implementation of stringent safety protocols to guarantee the well-being of every animal and employee under Bay Paws' care.

Beyond her professional expertise, Wendy is known for her vibrant personality and diverse interests. She possesses a wonderful sense of humor and a deep love for nature, particularly bears, wolves, and tigers. She is a loyal Miami Dolphins fan (yes even in the bad years!).  Her home is shared with her beloved Australian Shepherd, Onyx, and two cats, Willow (Tortie) and Baloo (Russian Blue).

Wendy is a dedicated individual who cherishes her relationships with family and friends, placing immense value on these connections in her life. She is a passionate advocate for mental wellness and suicide prevention, facilitating grief groups for survivors of suicide loss.  Her dedication underscores her compassionate nature and desire to positively impact others.
